Brave: How I Wrote the Theme Song for Kids Camp 2013

IMG_0490I will be honest. songs either come easy for me or they are tougher to realize. The song, “Brave,” for the latest Kids Camp was the latter. My first creative mine-field was the fact that Sara Barellies released a hit song Brave.

Also, a factor is I’m coming off the heels of an album and I was struggling with the need to incorporate my “style” that I’d established on the record.

When I’m asked to write a theme song for a camp, the leadership have the week’s theme well planned out. In fact, I’m given a stack of papers with every bible verse the kids would be studying for each day of the week. The theme for Brave is the Book of Daniel.

So I mapped out the themes in this way. The center theme I honed in on was from Deuteronomy 31:6

“Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the LORD your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.”

Here is how the lyrics worked out:

Brave

I won’t be afraid anymore,
no I won’t be afraid.
cause God is with me
yeah, God is with me

I will stand for what is right
I’ll stand for what is right
cause God is with me
yeah, God is with me

I’ll be Brave, I’ll be Brave
I’ll be Brave, I’ll be Brave
yeah, yeah, yeah

I won’t be afraid anymore,
no I won’t be afraid.
cause God is with me
yeah, God is with me

I will obey and follow you
I will follow you
Cause God is for me
yeah God is for me

Chorus:
We’ll be strong and courageous
Standing firm in the God that saved us
Our Love will be contagious
taking on the world in the name of Jesus

Whatever I do
Whatever I say
Wherever I go
Lord, this I pray
Whatever this world I might send my way,
I’ll Be Brave!

They can throw me in the lion’s den
I don’t care when (accented phrase here)
yeah, case God is with me
yeah God is with me
