How to plan singable songs

We always want to strive to engage our congregations in worship every Sunday. One of the best ways we can do that is the plan singable songs. Here are just a few questions to ask when planning a new song.

  • Are we singing this song enough? Plan new songs every 2-3 weeks and keep them in rotation for at least 3 to 4 weeks straight. Repeat it so the congregation knows it.
  • Have we introduced the song as special? Setup the “why” of the new song. Helping the congregation understand the attributes or attitudes this song expresses to God can help them be open to learning it in a deep way. The words can become a personalized response to God.
  • Can you sing the entire song away from the guitar, at home, doing something entirely unrelated? If you are having a hard time remembering it, the congregation definitely is gonna have a hard time with it.
  • Is the key of the song singable? This is something that is not considered I think often enough. If the song is too high then it alleviates a lot of men singing in the congregation, but on the flipside if it’s too low the lead melody often times will get lost in the mix.
