On Co-writing, Part 1.

For my upcoming album, I’ve enlisted several co-writers for many of the songs. One brilliant artist I’ve always wanted to work with is Thomas Porter. Thomas is an extraordinarily talented singer songwriter, especially in the styles of country and bluegrass. (though he excels in rock and pop too)

For some, this may seem like a strange departure for me, stylistically speaking, but in context, this bluegrass type song really fits nicely into the overall groove of the record. See Related Post: Upcoming Album Update.

For this song, Thomas wrote a majority of the lyrics. I expressed the initial idea and feel I was going for, and then he helped me flesh that out.

Remember, this is a first draft, but here is an example of how we collaborated:

Song idea: Shine and Light

Thomas’ Verse:

Better in this world you know

Day and night through darkness do

there is someone who will light your way

Rob’s verse:

He appears like the Dawn

fair as moon, bright as Sun

And He’s rising like a Bright and Morning Star
