Girls Rock

As a father of two little girls, I’m excited to see they’ll be growing up in a world where we are seeing talented women guitarists pushing the envelope of musical innovation. We’re experiencing a sort of Renaissance in guitar today, and it seems I’m coming across more and more female guitarists who have moved beyond the “Orianthi: same stuff we’ve been hearing for 25 years, mentality,” to hearing some incredible stabs at originality. With out further ado, here are a few bands, with girls, that rock:

St. Vincent: Anne Clark goes by the moniker St. Vincent, and not only is she a great player and singer, she controls her effects with a midi foot controller. That rocks!

Firehorse: Leah Siegel, again great guitar player and singer, fronts this awesome band out of Brooklyn, NY

Widowspeak: Molly Hamilton, sings lead vocals and swings the axe in this crooning indie three piece. A great example of a female involved as a creative member of a band.

School of Seven Bells: I became a fan of this female fronted, dreamy-state band  when they rocked the  south by southwest festival a year or so ago. Claudia Deheza’s vocals croons away with the wash guitar tones that really make the vibe of the music happen.

Kim Steele: I would be amiss if it didn’t complete the list with Kim Steele, an amazing guitarist who plays here at North Phoenix Baptist Church and all-around town. You can check her band out at http://www.facebook.com/ReignDown and also over at http://myspace.com/kimsteelemusic

So, I know there are many other Girls that Rock out there, what artist do you know?
