The Demoing Process

So, after a few weeks of making demos of song after song (30!), my new album is taking shape. The biggest change for me, is presenting the listener (myself included) a cohesive stylistic direction in the music.  In past recordings my songs have reflected a variety of influences, I think mainly due to the collaborative songwriting dynamic that exists when you play in a band.

But, this time its just me, my voice. This time around the songs feel like one direction and one style. This will be a pleasant surprise for those who’ve been fans of my music in the past. Because of the way I think, ideas come and go from my brain fast, so I’m using a few tools to help “capture” the ideas quickly.

Soundcloud -App Iphone – This App records and cataloges instantly, using the on board phone mic. I probablly use this first to capture the inital idea of a verse, guitar riff, or lyric idea. This also syncs to the soundcloud website.

Reason 5.0 -PC Software – Reason is a robust sequencing software that lets me take ideas from the drawing board and move the sounds around how I wish. In this early part of the process, I’m utilizing the myrid of preprogramed drum beats to better convey the groove of a song.

Motu UltraLite Mk3 – This is the A/D interface with 2 stereo preamp, 6 channel inputs and a midi interface. It is the most powerful desktop studio interfaces I’ve ever seen, or heard. It sounds FANTASTIC!!!
